Dancer - June 2024

"Joining the Manchester Mexican Folk Group has been a transformative experience for me. The weekly dance classes have not only allowed me to immerse myself in authentic Mexican culture but also to connect with a vibrant community of like-minded individuals. The joy and passion for Mexican folk dance shared by everyone is truly infectious. Performing on stage and practicing Spanish in such a welcoming environment has enriched my life in Manchester. I highly recommend this group to anyone looking to celebrate and embrace Mexican culture!"

"I danced Mexican folk for many years in Mexico. When I came to Manchester, I thought this was going to be the end of my dancing journey. However, I found and joined the Manchester Mexican Folk Group and it feels as if I have never left Mexico. The dance instructor and dancers are very friendly and make me feel at home. The rehearsals are fun and energetic. I feel my fitness level is increasing after each practice."

"I have always danced since I remember. All I know is that I have seen my parents dancing and I enjoyed the colours in movement when I was little, then I loved wearing my own dresses and took up dancing at an early age. Dancing Mexican folklore connects me with my roots, my culture and I really enjoy the emotions that I can feel from the audience when they see us dance. Dancing on stage boosts my confidence in general."

"In Mexico we all dance folklore as a PE sort of subject in schools up to high school. In Manchester, I started in 2008 when I joined the Manchester Mexican Folk Group, firstly because of the emotions that they transmitted to me as an audience and now I enjoy these emotions from the other side, as a performer, it is such a rewarding feeling. But behind the performance, I really enjoy the rehearsals, in a friendly, easy going environment that connects me with my culture, improves my fitness levels and stamina. I love the challenges and companionship that is shared in the folkloric dance groups, that is why I dance."

"Even when we dance folklore in Mexico at school from childhood, my dancing journey in Manchester started when I arrived in 2008. Joining the Manchester Mexican Folk Group not only made me feel welcome but it was an opportunity for me to improve my fitness level, dancing skills and also an opportunity to connect with my country and my culture. I like the fact that in spite of intense exercise, it does not mean we cannot have fun. Also, when we perform, I like the reactions of the audience, it is a unique experience every time we dance."

"I have always loved dancing Mexican Folklore since I was a little child back in Mexico. When I came across this dancing group in Manchester I did not hesitate to join. It is a lovely way to keep our roots alive, the bantering is great and it is such a good exercise!

I consider myself fortunate for being able to show our culture to others, It makes me feel very proud of where I come from."
